Adding & subtracting fractions

This week in Maths, the Bluebirds in year 3 have been adding and subtracting fractions.

We have been using the fraction cubes to compare fractions and help us when adding and subtracting fractions.

Daisy B said 1/3 is greater than 1/4.

Maya said 2/12 and 1/6 are equivalent fractions.

We worked together on the interactive white board answering equations first. Daisy C showed how much of the pizza was left after two slices had been eaten.

Then, we completed work in our books.

Inference

This afternoon in our guided reading lesson, we were talking about inference. We had to infer how people were feeling and thinking about what could have caused that emotion. Some Bluebirds came to the front and mimed a feeling, as a group, we discussed how they were feeling and why.

Max showed us the feeling confused… we thought he could be confused because he doesn’t understand the work he was asked to do.

We then looked at pictures on the board, we discussed with our talk partner, what the person in the picture was doing, how the person in the picture was feeling and answered a why question about the picture. Then we also discussed the possible cause and effect of what was happening in the picture.

Andrew said the boy was feeling sad as he’s fallen off his bike. A dip in the road or his first time riding without stabilisers has caused him to fall off his bike and the effect was that he has hurt his knee.

Then we had two pictures with inference questions to answer, our questions also included a cause and effect question.

Character Speech

This morning in English, the Bluebirds in year 3 were looking at character speech. We used fiction texts like fairy tales to think of what the characters said in the story.

We were given four characters from familiar stories and thought about what they said in the story. In our class reader, The Lost Happy Endings, Jub speaks to the witch when they meet in the forest. On our sheet, in the bubbles, we wrote what the character said and in the reported clause box we wrote who said it. Today, we used the word said, later in the week, we will thinking of synonyms for said to make our writing more interesting.

Role on the wall – Jub

This afternoon in English, Bluebirds in year 3 were writing a role on the wall for Jub. Jub is the main character in our new class reader – The Lost Happy Ending.

We read a few more pages together and then thought of all the ways we could describe Jub, thinking about where she lives, what she is feeling, what she looks like and the job she does. We came up with some ideas together.

Then we wrote our own role on the wall for Jub.

Our new book ‘The Lost Happy Endings’

This morning in English, the Bluebirds in year 3 we started reading a new book – The Lost Happy Endings.

First, read a section of the book together, then we looked in the book to find adjectives.
Millie said damp
Daisy B said darkening
Eason said huge
Hollie said old
Imogen found the synonym for old and said ancient
George said tallest

Next, we looked for nouns.
Miss Hooks said Jub, the main character
Imogen said tree
Harvey said forest
Holly said branch
Raman said twigs
Maarya said fireworks

After that, we looked for verbs.
Andrew said carry and shake
Dora said fluttered
Maya said ironed, cooked and shopped

Miss Hooks wrote all the words down and put them on the window so that we can use them when we are writing.
