Understanding Harvest

Today Bluebirds had a class discussion and activity based around harvest.  They talked about giving to those less fortunate than ourselves and talked about how Christians give thanks in church.  They talked about the facts they had learnt from today’s assembly by Year 5.
Thomas S – I loved the samba song they performed the best.
Alex us – I realised that harvest is celebrated all over the world.
The children all looked at the letters in HARVEST to see how many other words they could find.  Some children reached 30!  Mrs Parry pointed out some that were significant during harvest time such as EAT and ATE, thinking about people needing food.  Interestingly, Alexus had made the word SHARE and Ryan had made the word STARVE.

Excited in ERIC

In Bluebirds class, we like to make the most of our ERIC time! We like to read a range of books; from fiction to non-fiction, graphic novels and even revisiting our class readers.
We also like to immerse ourselves in what we are reading by dressing up as the character in the books we are reading.

Feelings

During their reading lesson, the Bluebirds were looking at different character’s feelings and how we can tell what they are feeling from evidence in the text. We looked at how characters might look in the illustrations, what they might say or what they might do.

Stone Age Boy

This week, the Bluebirds started their new class reader, Stone Age Boy. So far, we have read up to page 15.
We looked at the page where the boy meets the stone age girl and did freeze frames of some of the illustrations and thought about what the boy might be thinking and how he might be feeling – he’s fallen into a strange world and now has met a strange, new friend!

Learning new words

This week, the Bluebirds have been learning how to use a dictionary. We have been looking up unfamiliar words in a poem on the carpet together. We used our knowledge of the alphabet to help us find the first letter of the word. We then used our scanning fingers to go down the list of words to find the word we were looking for and then read the definition. We put our hands on our heads to show Mrs Moore we’d found the word.
In our reading lesson later in the week, we looked up unfamiliar words from our reading book in small groups and found the definitions.

Marching Music!

Bluebirds enjoyed listening to The Colonel Bogey March by Kenneth Alford.  Most people couldn’t resist tapping along to the music and in the end everyone stood up and marched in time!
Ryan – The music sounds funny
Frankie – It reminds me of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
Thomas – The beginning was very loud!
Olivia – I can hear the drums
Thomas L – They bashed the cymbals
Afterwards, everyone played glockenspiels and used the notes C and F.
